I have a print that I've recently acquired and have found it to be a print by George Wotherspoon. I am pretty confident tha I have identified it to be Gossip, and Satan came also. The print is still being reproduced and sold. The question I have is How do I know how old the print I have is and if it is old is it more valuable than the newer print? The markings I've found on it are Published by Art - Lore, Inc., N.Y.C. and the copyright mark of House of Art, N.Y. I haven't yet been able to contact either Art - Lore or Houseof Art. Another question I have is should I try to remove the print from it's mat and frame to see other markings or would doing so harm it in any way?
Thanks, for any help.
Lisa

as you said lots of people and companies are selling this print today, it was originally produced around 100 years ago.
one clue is the framing, how is the print framed? does the frame look old?
you can upload a picture of the frame here (you have a 500 kb maximum size that you can upload) if you can upload a picture of the back of the frame - the corner area

hi Lisa, i'd also add that i'm not entirely sure when copyright marks began to be used on prints, however i don't think they were that common before the 1950s, which doesn't mean anything much in itself ... but hopefully i'll be able to tell more if you upload a photo of your item

... thanks for talking about George Wotherspoon, i wasn't really familiar with this artist's work before, so i did a bit of research about him.
what an interesting guy! he's especially famous for these optical illusion type prints, like the one that you have, where depending how you look at the picture it can appear to be different pictures.
which in your case is a picture of two ladies gossiping or a devil's head, depending on where your eyes focus, fascinating stuff.

My Uncle gave me the Gossip pix in the late 60's I think. It has a copyright date of 1905. I've never taken the back off. It looks old and breakable. Just wondering if it is worth anything.
I'll be sending pictures.Thank you,
