Be aware to be realistic with your expectations, although you always hear stories about bargains bought in thrift stores, garage sales and charity shops or treasures found in old garages or attics.

The truth is that the chances of finding something very valuable are not that high.

My own personal experience - which of course will not necessarily be the same as that of other people - is that it is incredibly unusual to find anything valuable and when you do it is very rarely for sale for pennies!

In fact only once have i found a bargain in this way which was worth considerably more than i paid for it - and in this case i actually paid $500 for the print (in its original frame), this was also several years ago so with inflation that would be a fair bit more than 500 in today's money.

However i believe value is about more than money, owning a genuinely old print that you get pleasure from is very worthwhile even if the print isn't worth much in cash terms!

    I'd agree.

prints that are worth a lot of money now were generally expensive in the first place - probably not as valuable as they might be now but the principle holds.

so you've found a picture in grandma's attic? do you think she might have paid $30 for it in the 1920's? in which case it is quite likely pretty valuable today!

by the way $30 in the 1920s is what a male office worker would earn in a week.

... although, anything of course is possible.

and it is true that there are items that cost next to nothing which can be worth a fair amount now - old newspapers are a case in point.

... another example would be a series of lithographed posters issued for schools in the UK in the 1940s, where several famous artists including Picasso, Matisse, Braque, Dufy and Moore produced work for the project, these items can reach around £1000 ($1,500) each today - there were 24 posters in the series but the works by lesser artists do not really have any value
